Famous producer David Belasco's famous play about the Old West is remembered today because it was adapted into the opera La Fanciulla del West. But Belasco's novelization not only fills out the story told by the opera. It's also an interesting look into the California of Belasco's mining camp childhood, and both counters the myths spread by dime novels while using them to get an audience for his tale.
